In the northeast, as well as most of the US, the main pancake restaurants are IHOP and Perkins. But in the last few years, a new pancake eatery has been making inroads into many areas around the country. That place is the Original Pancake House.
IHOP has been a mainstay in many parts of the country for years. While the number of their locations may be greater than ever, the pancakes and the atmosphere are not. Up through the 80′s, many IHOPs still had the “ski chalet” architecture and atmosphere, which was quite cozy. That design also differentiated them from other restaurants and such. The food was usually pretty good, also. Most IHOPs now subscribe to the big box, atmosphere-less school of building, which is so prevalent these days. It’s near impossible to tell them apart from one of the offensive big box drug stores that have over-populated our landscape. Unfortunately, the pancakes are nothing to crow about anymore, either.
Perkins, on the other hand, with a few modifications, have generally kept to their design. While nothing truly special, the pancakes have remained very tasty, though, over the years, the portions have shrunk. This restaurant still seems more individualistic that what IHOP has become.
Now, if you’re lucky, an Original Pancake House has opened in your area. Surely, this is what a pancake restaurant is supposed to be. Quite honestly, the selection and quality of the previously mentioned pancake eateries are not even comparable to this establishment. On my visits to this restaurant, I tend to go for the sourdough, crepe-like 49er Flapjacks, which are truly out of this world. But, believe me, it doesn’t begin or end there. Their selection of specialty pancakes is a bonanza for the flapjack lover.
Consumer Obsession whole-heartidly recommends this establishment.
