Dunkin’ Donuts Freezing The Taste Out Of Their Product

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

A few months back, Consumer Obsession featured this review comparing Dunkin’ Donuts to Krispy Kreme.  Our opinion was that, while it was hard to deny that Krispy Kreme’s fresh, hot donuts were and are very good, once cooled, they became very average, even sub-par.  The donuts at Dunkin’ Donuts, on the other hand, were consistently very good in taste and texture.

But, an unfortunate change has taken place at many newer Dunkin’ Donuts franchises:  The donuts are not being actually made on site; they are being brought into the stores frozen and then baked on site.  Dunkin’ Donuts has stated that is a more efficient way to make and sell their donuts.  It keeps the shelves stocked and cuts down on waste.  While all of that may very well be true, this change has had a seriously negative effect on their product.

In our region, a new Dunkin’ Donuts opened in the past year.  There was an obvious difference right from the first bite.  The donuts, which had always been relatively light, now seemed heavier and less fresh.  The glazed, which had always been very good, now tasted like sugar-coated cardboard. Repeated visits offered the same results, to the point that we simply stopped going.  We weren’t alone.  Many other long-time Dunkin’ Donuts devotees would tell me the same thing:  These are not the same donuts that we loved.

The brass at Dunkin’ Donuts claims that these donuts and the new methods were taste-tested and that consumers could not tell the difference.  Consumer Obsession finds this difficult to believe, as the difference is major – major enough that the donut we formerly gave high praise to, is now nearly in-edible.

Red Robin or Fuddruckers Update: A Visit to Red Robin

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

This past evening, I happen to be out with my wife and daughter.  We were in the vicinity of a Red Robin Gourmet Burgers restaurant, and my wife, since it had been some time since we had eaten there, suggested a visit.  It seemed like good timing, since Consumer Obsession had just recently featured the Red Robin vs. Fuddruckers piece.

First of all, I was a little suprised that it wasn’t very busy.  Usually, in that area at dinner time, it’s hectic to say the least.  Then again, as most of us know, people are eating out less right now, due to economic conditions, and after visiting Red Robin and seeing their current prices, I can see why people could be cutting back on the visits.

I decided to go for the old standby, the bacon cheeseburger, though I was a little shocked the see the $9.59 price tag.  Red Robin’s burgers aren’t known for being all that big, but they do include the “bottomless” french fries.  Their fries still don’t make the price go down any easier, as I found them to be only average.  I must say, though, the burger was decent.  I ordered it medium, and while it was slightly overcooked, it still had some hints of pink.  I found it to taste better than my previous experiences at the restaurant, but I still didn’t think it warranted the high price tag.

A larger and truly great-tasting burger can be had in my area for nearly half the price Red Robin is charging for theirs.  And if we are again comparing Red Robin to Fuddruckers, Fuddruckers proves to be a better value.  While not cheap, one can get more for their money at Fuddruckers.

It’s really too bad, because I would eat that Red Robin burger again, but not at that price.

Popular Restaurants In Danger Of Failing

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Yahoo! Finance recently did an article on the major restaurant and food chains they see that are in danger of failing.  It’s an interesting little piece that includes a couple of chains I’m not familiar with.

Just a few notes on some of the choices:

  • Perkins Restaurant and Bakery – For some reason, Perkins doesn’t seem to get the traffic that a Denny’s or IHOP does.  That probably has more to do with image than food quality.  As mentioned in a past Consumer Obsession piece, Perkins pancakes are actually very good.  I prefer them over IHOP or Denny’s.  Unfortunately, Perkins doesn’t seem very “young,” which gives them the rap of being place for the “retiree” set to eat.  While they don’t seem overly busy, I haven’t noticed any Perkins closings in the W. PA area.
  • Krispy Kreme – Everyone knows Krispy Kreme screwed up.  They expanded way too fast and put way too many franchises out there.  That being said, I can’t see this chain going down the tubes.  There’s still a lot of tradition there, as well as people who still like partaking in a hot glazed.  The shrinkage is taking place.  Stores are closing, but that needs to happen for Krispy Kreme to regain its health.
  • Sbarro – Now this one is interesting.  A mall Sbarro near my home just recently shuttered its doors.  As you know, the current retail market is lousy, and many retail center, including malls, are hurting right now.  Sbarro could very well be vulnerable in the current conditions.  According to the Yahoo! article, Sbarro lost $5.7 million during the first quarter this year.

Mexican Sugar-Sweetened Coke Garners More Press

mexican-coke

The availability of the sugar-sweetened Mexican Coca-Cola is getting more press.  The Consumer Report offshoot, Shop Smart, has a small blurb dedicated to it in its July issue.  Consumer Reports states that in their taste tests, the Coke sweetened with sugar, rather than HFCS, was “slightly sweeter, and some said it has a fuller, rounder, more complex flavor.”

While Consumer Obsession may not have used the terms “fuller” and “rounder,” we did tell you that it tastes better.  Head on over to the nearest Costco, pick up a case of bottles, and check it out for yourself.

Will Pepsi Throwback Take You Back To The Golden Era Of Soda?

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

pepsi-throwback1

To great fanfare, Pepsico has rolled out its Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback choices, which are sweetened by sugar, rather than High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).  HFCS has been the predominate sweetener in soft drinks since the early 80′s.

While many soft drink enthusiasts have lamented the change-over from sugar, there were other changes that had a major effect on how soda tasted and its carbonation.  The mass-market switch to plastic bottles, rather than glass, probably had a more profound effect than the sweetener modification.  The carbonation didn’t “hold” like it did in the capped glass bottles, therefore the switch to plastic made all soda a bit flatter.

Over the years, Coca-Cola has been back in the marketplace with six-packs of their small glass bottles and Pepsi has done small runs of the same.  Some Costco stores have started carrying the Mexican version of coke in bottles, which still contains sugar as its sweetener.

While using sugar instead of HFCS does make a positive taste difference, it’s rather subtle when being consumed from a plastic bottle.  In a perfect world, the sugar and the glass bottle would be back in place, so we could enjoy these beverages the way they were meant to be enjoyed.

The KFC – Oprah Debacle

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

oprahkfc

Wow, what a mess.  KFC gets Oprah to feature their new grilled chicken (which we review below) and announce a coupon offer for a free two-piece meal and then can’t meet the demand caused by the coupon.

This situation doesn’t look good for KFC.  Thousands and thousands of people printed out the coupon and tried to redeem, but it seems that many of the franchisees were not prepared to give so much free food away.  Many of the franchisees were also claiming that they were not being reimbursed by corporate.

While some say any publicity is good publicity, there’s no positive in this matter for KFC, unless they come up with a plan that satisfies the angry public.

Consumer Obsession’s Top Supermarket Chocolate Chip Cookie Not Included In Recent Consumer Reports Test

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Awhile back, Consumer Obsession published its picks for best supermarket chocolate chip cookie and we actually felt there was a very clear winner, the Pepperidge Farm standard Nantucket, though its variations were also very good.  While the soft-baked choices were good, we didn’t feel as though they were as good.  Unfortunately, in Consumer Reports current testing of mass-market chocolate chip cookies, they decided to only include the soft-baked version.  Now, in our eyes, the standard version would have been a game changer.

Consumer Reports gives the esteemed CR Best Buy and very good rating to a cookie that we actually didn’t rate all that highly, Keebler’s Chips Deluxe Original.  To us, Keebler’s chocolate chip cookies truly taste like mass-market products.  This is not to say they’re poor, but they’re nothing special, and they were easily trumped by our Pepperidge Farm winner.

To those of you who have tried these cookies, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

KFC Grilled Chicken Review

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

kfc_grilled_chicken

A few days ago, I finally made my way to a nearby KFC and tried their new grilled chicken.  As mentioned in a previous Consumer Obsession post, KFC was a long time coming with this offering and I was hoping it would be worth it.

KFC’s grilled chicken has received mostly positive notices on the internet from people, who have tried it, so right away after sampling the first bite, I was a little surprised.  The chicken was very bland.  There seemed to be a real lack of any seasoning on the chicken.  If it was seasoned, it was extremely weak and unimaginative.  There were three of us sampling the chicken and all of us had the same immediate reaction – that it really needed something.  It was kind of a shame, because with a little something more, the chicken could have been a contender, but as it is, it really isn’t.

Hopefully, the people at KFC haven’t completely removed this item from the drawing board, as it’s worth developing.  Unfortunately, in its current version, I couldn’t rate it a success, yet that doesn’t mean it’s not an idea lacking potential.

They’re Probably Building A Sonic Drive-in Near You. Was It Worth The Wait?

sonic

In the last year or so, the Sonic Drive-in has ramped up its expansion into various areas of the US.  Areas outside the midwest are finally getting to try out the fast food chain they’ve seen advertised for years.  But was it worth the wait?

Until a year or so ago, we at Consumer Obsession had not had the opportunity to try a Sonic Drive-in.  But, in that time, three Sonics have opened up in our vicinity.  The arrival of the legendary fast food drive-in had us rather excited.  How would it compare?  Were we impressed or disappointed?  Well, a little of both.

Truth be told, the food, even by fast food standards, was nothing to write home about.  The Sonic hot dog was a bland disappointment.  While Consumer Obsession loves its hot dogs, there was nothing to make us get the Sonic dog again.  The burgers were merely ok.  They were a little different than the standard McDonald’s, Burger King or Wendy’s patties, but not necessarily better – just different.  The french fries weren’t bad.  There was none of the fake coating that has plagued fast food fries in recent years, which is a good thing.  They, again, were very average.  But, with the quality of fast food fries going downhill this past decade, Sonic’s “average” french fries were better than many.

Sonic does have a wide selection drink and slushy variations, which have proved to be popular with consumers.  The restaurants in our area typically run afternoon happy hours with half-priced selections, which is actually a pretty good deal.

The new Sonic Drive-ins have opened with quite a bit of fanfare and then cooled off considerably.  It will be interesting to see how the chain performs after the dust settles.

KFC Offering Grilled Chicken

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

kfc_grilled_chicken

In the world of fast food, KFC offering grilled chicken is a pretty big deal.  While considered blasphemous by some of the old Kentucky Fried Chicken stalwarts, it’s an idea that probably should have come awhile ago.

Most fast food brands have come up with somewhat healthier alternatives to put on their menu.  Choice in today’s fast food market place is a powerful and desired trait.  KFC really had the perfect opportunity sitting under their collective noses forever.  All they had to do was offer a reasonable tasting grilled chicken alternative.  So, they have.  And the reviews thus far have been favorable.

Consumer Obsession will be providing a full review of KFC’s grilled chicken very soon.
